Use everyday activities such as laundry time to encourage your child’s language.

speech techniques during laundry time

We use language everyday, all day. You can take advantage of your everyday activities to boost your child’s language. Boosting your child’s language establishes a good foundation for reading, writing and school success. We want children to use their language skills to describe, explain, retell, and problem solve – these are important school skills.

So take the everyday activities and turn them into teachable moments by purposefully encouraging your child to speak by asking questions, talk about what you do and what you see.

While you do your laundry talk about these words with your child: laundry, shirt, pants, socks, sweather, pajamas, soap, detergent, big, small, rough, soft, same, different, match, pair, dirty, clean, soapy, wet, cold water, hot water, pouring, washing, spinning.

What do we do?

laundry time Do laundry together and talk with your child about the steps of doing laundry. What do we do first, next and last? This helps your child use language to explain and predict.

Same or different?

different Talk about clothes that are same or different. “Are these two shirts the same?” Daddy’s shirt is different than yours. “His shirt is big, and yours is small!” “Are these socks the same colour?”

Body Parts

pantsTalk about clothes that you wear on your legs, on your head or on your feet. For example, have your child pick up all the clothes that you wear on your legs.

Sort the clothes!

socksHelp your child sort the laundry by colour, size or type of clothing (e.g., shirts, pants, socks)> This teaches your child organization, matching and that things can be put into groups different ways!
